Sad  General functionality problems

Good day, I have had Ubuntu for a while now and I have gotten used to using it. I established a dual boot with Windows XP Home Edition for Dell Dimension 3000 series that came with the computer. My computer ended up crashing and I had to re-partition and decided to go with a single boot (which I have now, Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Herron). Lately I have had a few problems with the my open source programs. I.E. Rythmbox Music Player- sometimes it will not play music and I have to restart the computer for it to play and it always ends up stopping. 2) My movie player does not play movies, even though they are .MP4 files, 3) my playlist on "playlist.com" oft times fails to load. I know that it is possible for my specs to just suck, but 1. I have a stock computer that can take a beating 2. I am using a stable LTS version of Ubuntu 3. I keep the parts clean and don't keep it on a long time. Here are the specs
2.8 GHz intel pentium II dual-core processor
512 MB of DDR (RAM) upgradeable up to 2-4GB
80Gb HD with 25.4GB of free space
32-bit color depth, although I have the 24(+/-) bit Ubuntu.
I take great care of it and my previous Ubuntu set up didn't seem to have the problems. I just want to know what my options are (upgrade RAM or something through the Terminal) or I have burned a Fedora CD if that would be a better option for me.
Thanks
