Some time ago downloaded and installed Shift Linux an Ubuntu-based distro made by the Neowin community. The first thing I was impressed with was the speed of download. I got full HTTP speed and downloaded it in 25 minutes or so. I burned the ISO to a DVD and started up my VMware:

Nice boot menu screen, lots of options. I chose the first.


No splash screen, maybe that'll come in a later version, doesn't matter though, I like me a little command-line lookin' action.


Very sleek, very cool.


Nice menus etc.


You'll notice quickly during install and after word that it's exactly like Ubuntu except it has a different theme.














WTF!?


So at this point I tried a second time and got the same error. I tossed the computer aside and got something to eat. I did a quick google search on the error which turned up nothing.

So I then closed my VM, got a fresh DVD, burned the ISO a second time, started my VM, and this time it installed perfectly, infact the liveCD had better performance with the second disk.

So I've got it installed:





-- Final Conclusion --

If you've already got Ubuntu installed, don't bother with installing this, just theme your current Ubuntu install to look like this.

If you want to try Linux but have avoided it because the Ubuntu brown is ugly (and it is) and you think that Ubuntu is the only easy Linux Distribution then you can get Shift Linux, have your Ubuntu with the ugly brown.

Yea, is that the default login or is that one you added on later. The reason that I ask is because I have also seen it at you blog, here http://c0lin.org/screenshots/gdm.png
